Off Road Tip of the Month: September 2008

Topic: How to distribute your weight correctly while riding off-road

When riding your motorcycle you may have to deal with a number of challenging maneuvers including:

  • Going around tight corners on dirt roads
  • Going up steep inclines
  • Riding down steep declines

Many of us feel a bit nervous riding our bike over or through such obstacles. We are scared that our bikes will slip out from under us.

There is good news:

By distributing your weight correctly while riding- you minimize the chance of losing your bike or falling off by 80%.

Next time you are out on the track practice some of these techniques:

1. Riding Uphill

When riding up-hill it is essential that you lean forward. This brings your weight to the front and off your back tyre.
If you ride like this you will have no problem reaching the top of the steepest of hills.

Downhill

2. Riding Downhill

When riding down-hill it is essential that you lean backwards. This takes your weight off the front tyre and stabilizes the rear of your motorcycle

If you ride like this you will have no problem descending the steepest of hills

3. Tight Left Corner

When taking any corner- it is essential that you put your weight on the outside foot. If you lean in to the corner as you do on a normal tar road- your bike will slip under you. By moving your weight to your outside foot you are actually anchoring your bike into the ground. As you can see in this picture the driver has actually lifted up his left foot and is putting all his weight on his right foot peg while taking a left corner.

Right Corner

4. Tight right Corner

As you can see this is example is just the opposite of the previous one. The driver is now taking a corner to the right- and so he is putting his weight onto the left hand foot peg.

This method may feel weird when you first apply it- but after you have mastered it- it will make your off road riding- a much safer and more enjoyable experience.

Extra tip: How to teach yourself weight distribution for when you take corners:

When we did the off road course at Country Trax in South Africa- they lined up a set of 6-8 traffic cones all about 8 feet apart from each other. We spent the whole day weaving curves through the cones.

Here is a diagram:

Traffic cones- practise

After you spend a couple of hours perfecting the cornering technique around traffic cones- you will be able to try it out on the open road- good luck!

A note about off road training

In South Africa Bmw offer a number of off road training courses- the most famous of which is a a training facility called Country Trax run by Jan Du Toit, in Kwazulu Natal.

By attending an off road course you will be able to put the theory learnt here, into practice under the supervision of a trained and qualified BMW Instructors.

The course takes place over a weekend- there are different courses for beginners and more advanced riders, and the Sama Team can guarantee it will be one of the best weekends you will ever have!

In other countries Bmw also offers similar off-road courses.

Ewan Mcgregor and Charlie Boorman actually attended an off road course in England before attempting "The Long Way Round" and the "Long Way Down". Without this essential off road training i doubt they would have succeeded in there mission to ride around the world and down through Africa.

While 99% of our tours do not include any off road sections- it is still good to do an off road course. International studies have found that riders who have off-road training and other types of formal motorcycle training are less likely to have motorcycle accidents.

Enjoy the riding and be safe!
